CLINKER-BUILDING

Specialty Definition: Clinker-building

(From Wikipedia, the free Encyclopedia)

The clinker-building style of ship (or boat) hull construction first came into use by Vikings.

Narrow planks are nailed to a frame of "ribs" which are first mounted on a heavy keel. The downward edge of each plank overlaps the plank below it.

Clinker-building was used in Europe and the Americas for centuries, even after the development of the more efficient caravel style.
