There are 21,348 households out of which 32.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 41.9% are married couples living together, 16.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 37.4% are non-families. 31.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.43 and the average family size is 3.04.
In the city the population is spread out with 27.2% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 29.5% from 25 to 44, 21.0% from 45 to 64, and 13.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 91.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 87.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city is $35,491, and the median income for a family is $43,564. Males have a median income of $36,838 versus $26,429 for females. The per capita income for the city is $18,424. 14.4% of the population and 10.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 17.5% are under the age of 18 and 11.8% are 65 or older.

The racial makeup of the city is 97.41% White, 0.09% African American, 1.38% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.43% from other races, and 0.69% from two or more races. 1.04% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 96.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.0 males.
The median income for a household in the city is $43,906, and the median income for a family is $50,179. Males have a median income of $34,792 versus $20,536 for females. The per capita income for the city is $16,996. 6.7% of the population and 4.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 5.4% are under the age of 18 and 8.1% are 65 or older.
