Antwerp (Antwerpen in Dutch; Anvers in French) is a municipality located in the Belgian province of Antwerp, of which it is the capital. The municipality comprises the city of Antwerp proper and the towns of Berchem, Berendrecht, Borgerhout, Deurne, Ekeren, Hoboken, Merksem, Wilrijk and Zandvliet. On January 1st, 2000 Antwerp had a total population of 446,525 (216,580 males and 229,945 females). The total area is 203.80 km² which gives a population density of 2,191.00 inhabitants per km².

Antwerp is notable as a centre of the diamond industry, both for trading and for cutting and polishing. Antwerp is also famous for its seaport with a lot of cargo shipping. Since the 1990s it has been recognized as a fashion design city, namely because of some graduates of the Royal Academy of Fine arts - Fashion, became internationally successful.

The river Schelde passes throught Antwerp. Antwerp is a major port, linked to the North Sea by the Schelde and the Westerschelde.

Antwerp is also notable for its zoo, which is one of the oldest and most famous zoos in the world. The Antwerp Zoo is located in the middle of the city and hosts more than 4000 animals. The Royal Society for Zoology has been watching over the welfare of numerous animals and helping to protect threatened animals for more than 100 years.

Antwerp is nicknamed "The Jerusalem of the West" because of its large orthodox Jewish (hasidic) community.

In the Eighty Years' War on November 4, 1576, Spain captured the city and nearly destroyed it after three days.

During World War II the city was occupied by Germany and was liberated on September 4, 1944 when the British 11th Armored Division entered the city.

Antwerp is the northernmost province of Flanders and of Belgium. It borders on (clockwise from the North) the Netherlands and the Belgian provinces of Limburg, Flemish Brabant and East Flanders. Its capital is Antwerp. It has a surface area of 2860 km² and is divided into three administrative districts (arrondissementen in Dutch) which contain 70 municipalities.

Antwerp is a town located in Jefferson County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 1,793.

Geography


According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 280.9 km² (108.4 mi²). 276.9 km² (106.9 mi²) of it is land and 4.0 km² (1.5 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.42% water.

Demographics


As of the census of 2000, there are 1,793 people, 621 households, and 453 families residing in the town. The population density is 6.5/km² (16.8/mi²). There are 717 housing units at an average density of 2.6 persons/km² (6.7 persons/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 97.99% White, 0.39% African American, 0.06% Native American, 0.33% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.39% from other races, and 0.84% from two or more races. 1.56% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 621 households out of which 35.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.0% are married couples living together, 8.5% have a woman whose husband does not live with her, and 26.9% are non-families. 20.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.89 and the average family size is 3.32. In the town the population is spread out with 29.8% under the age of 18, 9.1% from 18 to 24, 27.3% from 25 to 44, 24.1% from 45 to 64, and 9.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 102.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 99.8 males. The median income for a household in the town is $34,250, and the median income for a family is $40,192. Males have a median income of $28,824 versus $21,250 for females. The per capita income for the town is $13,097. 17.6% of the population and 12.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 22.5% are under the age of 18 and 10.6% are 65 or older.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 2.8 km² (1.1 mi²). 2.7 km² (1.0 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.0 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.78% water.

As of the census of 2000, there are 716 people, 260 households, and 166 families residing in the village. The population density is 263.3/km² (682.4/mi²). There are 305 housing units at an average density of 112.2 persons/km² (290.7 persons/mi²). The racial makeup of the village is 96.51% White, 0.28% African American, 0.14% Native American, 0.84% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.98% from other races, and 1.26% from two or more races. 2.93% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 260 households out of which 35.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.8% are married couples living together, 10.4% have a woman whose husband does not live with her, and 35.8% are non-families. 28.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 16.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.75 and the average family size is 3.40. In the village the population is spread out with 31.4% under the age of 18, 8.4% from 18 to 24, 25.3% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 12.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 94.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 93.3 males. The median income for a household in the village is $33,472, and the median income for a family is $40,833. Males have a median income of $36,042 versus $23,542 for females. The per capita income for the village is $12,881. 19.2% of the population and 15.7% of families are below the poverty line. Antwerp is located at 41°10'48" North, 84°44'21" West (41.180112, -84.739086)1. According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 3.0 km² (1.2 mi²). 3.0 km² (1.2 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics


As of the census of 2000, there are 1,740 people, 739 households, and 487 families residing in the village. The population density is 579.2/km² (1,500.1/mi²). There are 784 housing units at an average density of 261.0/km² (675.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the village is 97.82% White, 0.34% African American, 0.34% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.69% from other races, and 0.80% from two or more races. 2.18% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 739 households out of which 32.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.5% are married couples living together, 12.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 34.1% are non-families. 31.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.35 and the average family size is 2.97. In the village the population is spread out with 26.3% under the age of 18, 9.5% from 18 to 24, 28.9% from 25 to 44, 20.7% from 45 to 64, and 14.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 90.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 89.8 males. The median income for a household in the village is $33,139, and the median income for a family is $40,441. Males have a median income of $33,684 versus $23,158 for females. The per capita income for the village is $18,785. 8.9% of the population and 5.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 12.1% are under the age of 18 and 6.6% are 65 or older.
