Abstract: The compound (S)-N-(1-carboxy-2-methylprop-1-yl)-N-pentanoyl-N-[2'(1H-tetrazol-5-yl)biphenyl-4-yl-methyl]amine (valsartan) of formula ##STR1## or a salt thereof, in particular a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof, can be used for treating (acute and chronic) postischemic renal failure and for protecting the ischemic kidney.
