Alorton is a village located in St. Clair County, Illinois. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 2,749.

Geography


Alorton is located at 38°35'3" North, 90°7'4" West (38.584094, -90.117720)1. According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 4.6 km² (1.8 mi²). 4.6 km² (1.8 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

Demographics


As of the census of 2000, there are 2,749 people, 886 households, and 670 families residing in the village. The population density is 596.3/km² (1,545.3/mi²). There are 1,000 housing units at an average density of 216.9/km² (562.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the village is 1.56% White, 97.09% African American, 0.15% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.25% from other races, and 0.95% from two or more races. 0.73% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 886 households out of which 45.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 23.5% are married couples living together, 46.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 24.3% are non-families. 19.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.05 and the average family size is 3.43. In the village the population is spread out with 39.3% under the age of 18, 9.0% from 18 to 24, 27.8% from 25 to 44, 15.7% from 45 to 64, and 8.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 26 years. For every 100 females there are 87.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 78.5 males. The median income for a household in the village is $17,860, and the median income for a family is $19,833. Males have a median income of $21,579 versus $20,188 for females. The per capita income for the village is $8,777. 47.3% of the population and 41.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 57.8% are under the age of 18 and 26.1% are 65 or older.
