AE1. A diphthong in the Latin language; used also by the Saxon writers. It answers to the Gr. ai. The Anglo-Saxon short ae was generally replaced by a, the long / by e or ee. In derivatives from Latin words with ae, it is mostly superseded by e. For most words found with this initial combination, the reader will therefore search under the letter E. 2. Alt. of Ae |

It has probably the shortest placename in the British Isles and is within the Forest of Ae, managed by Forest Enterprise, part of the Forestry Commission. The form Æ is also a letter and ligature in the Latin alphabet. See Æ. Ae is a way to write the letter Ä of the German language alphabet.
