1. A card (usually plastic) that assures a seller that the person using it has a satisfactory credit rating and that the issuer will see to it that the seller receives payment for the merchandise delivered.

A card which grants its holder a prearranged credit limit to use at the retailers that have agreed to pay the credit-card company a percentage commission on the balance. A plastic card that can be used by the cardholder to make purchases or obtain cash advances using a line of credit extended by the financial institution that issued the card.
