Chaparral is a biome found in areas across the world, notably the California foothills, much of the Italian peninsula, Spain and the shores of the Mediterranean. Summers in the chaparral are arid; whilst winters are cool and damp. Dense thickets of evergreen shrubs and small trees make up the plant life.

Chaparral is a town located in Dona Ana County, New Mexico. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 6,117.

Geography


Chaparral is located at 32°2'21" North, 106°25'47" West (32.039072, -106.429630)1. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 100.4 km² (38.8 mi²). 100.4 km² (38.8 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics


As of the census of 2000, there are 6,117 people, 1,837 households, and 1,497 families residing in the town. The population density is 60.9/km² (157.8/mi²). There are 2,134 housing units at an average density of 21.3/km² (55.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 70.69% White, 1.26% African American, 1.29% Native American, 0.43% Asian, 0.18% Pacific Islander, 21.38% from other races, and 4.77% from two or more races. 64.49% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 1,837 households out of which 48.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 62.6% are married couples living together, 14.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 18.5% are non-families. 15.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 5.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.32 and the average family size is 3.70. In the town the population is spread out with 36.2% under the age of 18, 9.1% from 18 to 24, 28.6% from 25 to 44, 18.9% from 45 to 64, and 7.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 29 years. For every 100 females there are 101.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 95.1 males. The median income for a household in the town is $22,692, and the median income for a family is $26,153. Males have a median income of $23,904 versus $17,750 for females. The per capita income for the town is $10,033. 31.3% of the population and 25.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 42.6% are under the age of 18 and 24.8% are 65 or older.
