A thermoelectric compound semiconductor, consisting of bismuth atoms forming a hexagonal close-packed crystal with tellurium atoms that occupy two types of site, having covalent ionic bonding and weak van der Waals bonding respectively. Source: European Union. (references)

Mining

Bi2 Te2 S ; hexagonal rhombohedral; gray; and a thermoelectric material. Because it loses its semiconducting properties above 100 degrees C, it is of value chiefly in cooling devices. Alsocalled bismuth tritelluride. Syn:tetradymite. (references)
