| Domain | Definitions |
Transportation | Determines the maximum limit of the inert forces produced by acceleration during high-speed evolutions. Source: European Union. (references) |
Aerospace | A transducer which measures acceleration or gravitational forces capable of imparting acceleration. An accelerometer usually uses a concentrated mass (seismic mass) which resists movement because of its inertia. The displacement of the seismic mass relative to its supporting frame or container is used as a measure of acceleration. (references) |
Meteorology & Standards | A device which records the acceleration of a vibrating surface. Source: European Union. (references) |
Mining | A seismometer with response linearly proportional to the acceleration ofearth materials with which it is in contact. (references) |
Public Administration | In earthquake, a seismograph that measures the earth's movement speed in a given time; Instrument for measuring acceleration or vibrations. Source: European Union. (references) |

(From Wikipedia, the free Encyclopedia)
According to the principles of special relativity, the effects of gravity are equivalent to those of acceleration, so an accelerometer can make no distinction between these effects.
Accelerometers are used in inertial guidance systems, as well as in many other scientific and engineering systems.
