If there is a pair of tufts near the base of the siphon, and a ventral row of tufts, or a row of straight hairs following the pecten, the genus is identified as Culiseta.Credit: CDC.

There may be a row of closely set teeth, or spines on each side of the siphon near the ventral margin, otherwise know as pecten. Aedes aegypti is a vector for Dengue and Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF), as well as Yellow Fever.Credit: CDC.

There may be one or more scattered hairs, or tufts of hairs along the sides of the siphon beyond the pecten.Credit: CDC.

It's important not to confuse the hairs on the siphon with the uniform, closely set teeth of the pecten row.Credit: CDC.
