McCormick is a town located in McCormick County, South Carolina. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 1,489. It is the county seat of McCormick County6.Geography
McCormick is located at 33°54'49" North, 82°17'21" West (33.913565, -82.289154)1. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 9.7 km² (3.8 mi²). 9.7 km² (3.8 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there are 1,489 people, 657 households, and 400 families residing in the town. The population density is 152.9/km² (396.4/mi²). There are 737 housing units at an average density of 75.7/km² (196.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 32.51% White, 64.07% African American, 0.13% Native American, 0.13% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 1.41% from other races, and 1.75% from two or more races. 1.54% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 657 households out of which 26.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 33.3% are married couples living together, 23.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 39.1% are non-families. 37.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 16.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.24 and the average family size is 2.95. In the town the population is spread out with 24.0% under the age of 18, 8.6% from 18 to 24, 22.5% from 25 to 44, 26.3% from 45 to 64, and 18.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 77.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 75.8 males. The median income for a household in the town is $19,688, and the median income for a family is $34,375. Males have a median income of $26,027 versus $20,263 for females. The per capita income for the town is $14,338. 26.8% of the population and 20.7% of families are below the poverty line.
