In the mainstream and among other technical cultures (for example, medical people) this competes with the prefix mega-, but hackers tend to restrict the latter to quantification. macrology /mak-rol'*-jee/ n. 1. Finance | A rating system formerly used by examiners to evaluate the safety and soundness of savings institutions. MACRO is an acronym for the five elements that were evaluated: Management, Asset quality, Capital adequacy, Risk management and Operating results. Based on the examiner's evaluation, each element was rated on a scale of 1 to 5, and the institution was assigned an overall MACRO rating of 1 to 5. Rating 1 indicated a strong performance, significantly higher than average. Rating 2 reflected satisfactory performance, which was average or above. Rating 3 reflected performance that was marginal and as such was considered below average. Rating 4 referred to performance that was significantly below average. If left unchecked, such performance might have evolved into weaknesses or conditions that could have threatened the viability of the institution. Rating 5 was considered unsatisfactory; performance that was critically deficient and in need of immediate remedial attention. Such performance, by itself or in combination with other weaknesses, impaired the viability of the institution. The MACRO rating system was used by federal thrift examiners from 1984 until August 15, 1994, when it was replaced by the CAMELS rating system. See CAMELS. (references) |

A programming language macro is a text abstraction, which defines a name to represent a segment of program text. When a macro is defined, the language system (compiler or interpreter) automatically replaces instances of the macro name with replacement text. The amount of text used in the replacement is typically longer than the amount of text used to represent the name of the macro, and thus the term macro-expansion is used to describe this process.Languages such as C and assembly language have simple macro systems, implemented as preprocessors to the compiler or assembler. C preprocessor macros work by simple textual search-and-replace. More elaborate macros are available to C programmers by using an additional text-processing language such as M4.
Lisp languages such as Common Lisp and Scheme have more elaborate macro systems: In Lisp, macros behave like functions transforming program text, with the full language available to express such transformations. Lisp macros are used to define new syntactic constructs. Because of this flexibility Lisp has been titled "a programmable programming language".
Keyboard macros
There are also keyboard macros and editor macros, used interactively on a graphical user interface and text editor, respectively. These allow short sequences of keystrokes substitute for long sequences of commands, and can provide a simple form of automation for repetitive tasks.
Macro languages
A macro language is a programming language in which all or most computation is done by expanding macros. Macro languages are not widely used for general-purpose programming, but are common in text processing applications. Examples include M4 (mentioned previously) and TeX.

Quintus Naevius Sutorius Macro (or Quintus Naevius Cordus Sutorius Macro) (21 BC - 38 AD) was the commander of the Roman Praetorian Guard after the execution of Aelius Sejanus in October, 31. It is believed Macro was active in discrediting Sejanus and also directed the subsequent purge against his family and followers.Macro retained his command on the appointment of Caligula; it has been claimed that Macro killed the aged and ill Tiberius to ensure Caligula's succession. Suetonius states that he gained favor by prostituting his wife, Eunia (or Ennia), to the Emperor around 34. He was forced from office in 38 on the orders of Caligula and was either executed or committed suicide.
