Jefferson is a city located in Jefferson County, Wisconsin. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 7,338.

Geography


According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 12.1 km² (4.7 mi²). 11.6 km² (4.5 mi²) of it is land and 0.5 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 4.29% water.

Demographics


As of the census of 2000, there are 7,338 people, 2,816 households, and 1,819 families residing in the city. The population density is 635.3/km² (1,645.9/mi²). There are 2,934 housing units at an average density of 254.0 persons/km² (658.1 persons/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 94.28% White, 0.53% African American, 0.55% Native American, 0.46% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 3.04% from other races, and 1.12% from two or more races. 6.79% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 2,816 households out of which 30.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.8% are married couples living together, 10.2% have a woman whose husband does not live with her, and 35.4% are non-families. 28.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.41 and the average family size is 2.96. In the city the population is spread out with 22.8% under the age of 18, 9.8% from 18 to 24, 31.4% from 25 to 44, 20.1% from 45 to 64, and 16.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 98.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.7 males. The median income for a household in the city is $40,962, and the median income for a family is $47,737. Males have a median income of $32,500 versus $25,142 for females. The per capita income for the city is $19,124. 8.3% of the population and 5.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 11.2% are under the age of 18 and 7.0% are 65 or older.

Jefferson is a town located in Jefferson County, Wisconsin. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 2,265.

Geography


According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 113.9 km² (44.0 mi²). 112.7 km² (43.5 mi²) of it is land and 1.2 km² (0.5 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.05% water.

Demographics


As of the census of 2000, there are 2,265 people, 759 households, and 589 families residing in the town. The population density is 20.1/km² (52.1/mi²). There are 793 housing units at an average density of 7.0 persons/km² (18.2 persons/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 98.45% White, 0.18% African American, 0.44% Native American, 0.22% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.31% from other races, and 0.40% from two or more races. 0.97% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 759 households out of which 29.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 69.2% are married couples living together, 4.1% have a woman whose husband does not live with her, and 22.3% are non-families. 16.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.67 and the average family size is 2.98. In the town the population is spread out with 20.9% under the age of 18, 6.3% from 18 to 24, 29.7% from 25 to 44, 29.0% from 45 to 64, and 14.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 102.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 103.1 males. The median income for a household in the town is $52,813, and the median income for a family is $58,350. Males have a median income of $35,341 versus $24,167 for females. The per capita income for the town is $23,327. 2.2% of the population and 1.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 2.7% are under the age of 18 and 1.8% are 65 or older.
