Specialty Definition: Henry Hudson

(From Wikipedia, the free Encyclopedia)

Henry Hudson (place and date of birth are unknown, but September 12, 1570 seems likely; presumed to have died in 1611) was an English sea explorer and navigator.

In 1607, Hudson set sail on the Hopewell to find a northeast passage to Asia through the Arctic Ocean via the North Pole. The voyage was paid for by the Moscovy Company, one of a small number of corporations given Royal Charters. In June he reached the eastern shore of Greenland and started northward, mapping as they went. On the 20th they started out for Svalbard , eventually reaching an island on the northern end of the group on the 17th of July. At this point the ship was only 577 nautical miles from the pole, but it was clear there is no way to go further due to the ice and he decided to return to England on the 31st. On the return voyage Hudson discovered what is now known as Jan Mayen Island before reaching home in September.

In 1608 he tried again, this time sailing farther to the east along the northern coast of Norway. Once again all northern routes were blocked by ice and he ended up reaching Novaya Zemlya before turning back. This point had been reached by several crews in the past and was considered the end of the line, which convinced the Moscovy Company that there was no point funding further voyages.

At this point Hudson wanted to continue his explorations and turned to the Dutch East India Company for funding. They were particularly interested in shorter routes to the east, and commissioned a new ship for his use, the Halve Maen (Half Moon). The ship headed north in May 1609, but was forced to turn back before reaching Novaya Zemlya.

Instead the expedition headed west and eventually reached the Grand Banks, off Newfoundland, in early July. They spent the next four months exploring the east coast of North America, including Manhattan, Maine, and Cape Cod–the first Europeans to describe these locations (although Giovanni da Verrazano explored the same coast in 1524)–and sailing a distance up the Hudson River, which bears his name. The Dutch would later claim the area and set up a colony as New Amsterdam.

Upon returning to Europe in November they made port at Dartmouth, where Hudson was arrested for sailing under another country's flag. He was soon released.

In 1610 Hudson managed to get backing for yet another voyage under the English flag; this time the funding came from the Virginia Company and the British East India Company. At the helm of his new ship, the Discovery, he stayed to the north (some claim he deliberately went too far south with the Dutch), reaching Iceland on May 11, the southern end of Greenland on June 4, and then managing to turn around the southern tip of Greenland and continue west.

Excitement was high that a ship had finally found the Northwest Passage, and on June 25th they reached Hudson Strait at the northern tip of Labrador. Following the southern coast of the strait the ship sailed into Hudson Bay and spent the next months continuing to map and explore the eastern shores. In November the ship became trapped in the ice in James Bay, and the crew moved ashore for the winter.

When the ice cleared in the spring of 1611, Hudson wanted to continue exploring, but the crew wanted to return home. Eventually matters came to a head and the crew mutinied, setting Hudson, his son, and several other crew adrift in a small boat. They were never seen again, although some claim that he successfully made his way as far south as the Ottawa River.

Apparently the reports by Hudson of his voyage for the Dutch have been lost, but an account was given by Johannes de Laet in his work Nieuwe Wereldt ofte beschrijvinghe van West-Indien (first edition 1625). The same situation applies to the voyage of Adriaen Block.

Hudson Bay

(From Wikipedia, the free Encyclopedia)

Hudson Bay is a large body of water in northeastern Canada. It drains a large portion of the northern areas of Ontario, Quebec and Manitoba, exiting into the Arctic Ocean via the Hudson Strait. A smaller offshoot of the bay, James Bay, lies to the south. The placename used to also be, but now rarely, Hudson's Bay. On the east it is connected with the Atlantic Ocean by Hudson Strait, and on the north with the Arctic Ocean by Fox Channel (which is costumarily not part of the bay) and Fury and Hecla Strait.

The area around the bay is a lowland known as the Hudson Bay Lowlands. The area is drained by a large number of rivers and has formed a characteristic vegetation known as muskeg. Much of the landform has been shaped by the actions of glaciers and the shrinkage of the bay over long periods of time. Signs of numerous former beachfronts can be seen far inland from the current shore.

Hudson Bay was first discovered by Henry Hudson in 1610, while sailing on the Discovery. On this fourth voyage he worked his way around the west coast of Greenland and into the bay, mapping much of its eastern coast. The Discovery became trapped in the ice over the winter, and the crew survived onshore at the southern tip of James Bay. When the ice cleared in the spring Hudson wanted to explore the rest of the area, but the crew mutinied on June 22, 1611.

Sixty years later the Nonsuch reached the Bay and successfully traded for beaver pelts with the Cree. This led to the creation of the Hudson's Bay Company which bears its name to this day. The British crown awarded a trading monopoly on the Hudson Bay watershed, called Rupert's Land, to the Hudson's Bay Company. This land, an area of approximately 3,9 million sq.km., would in 1870 be ceded to Canada as part of the Northwest Territories when the trade monopoly was abolished.

Hudson Motor Car

(From Wikipedia, the free Encyclopedia)

The Hudson Motor Car Company made Hudson brand automobiles in Detroit, Michigan from 1909 to 1957.

Hudson Six-40, 1914

One of Hudson's most famous cars was the Terraplane in the 1930s.

The company had a number of 'firsts' for the auto industry including the self starter, dual brakes, and the first balanced crankshaft, which allowed the Hudson straight-6 engine to work at a higher rotational speed while remaining smooth, developing more power than lower-revving engines. Most Hudsons has straight-6 engines.

At its peak in 1929, 300,000 cars were produced in one year, including contributions from Hudson's other factories in Belgium, England and Canada.

Hudson ceased auto production from 1942 through 1945 to manufacture war materials during World War II, including aircraft parts and naval engines.

In 1954 Hudson merged with Nash Motors to become American Motors.

The brandname was discontinued two years later.

In the late 1950's the sedan's high horsepower to weight ratio made it a popular choice for use in drag racing, where it was a frequent winner in its class with minimal modification.

Hudson River

(From Wikipedia, the free Encyclopedia)

The Hudson River, originally called Muh-he-kun-ne-tuk in Mahican, is a river running mainly through New York State but partly forming the boundary between the states of New York and New Jersey. It is named for Henry Hudson, an Englishman sailing for the Netherlands, who explored it in 1609, though the first European to see it was the Italian Giovanni da Verrazano in 1524 whose expedition was financed by the citizens of Lyon, France, under the auspices of King Francois I. Early European settlement of the area clustered around the river.

View of the Hudson River with Jersey City, 1880s

The official source of the Hudson is Lake Tear-of-the-Clouds in the Adirondack Mountains. The Hudson is joined at Albany by the Mohawk River and flows south until it reaches the Atlantic Ocean between Manhattan Island and New Jersey, forming New York Harbor, at New York Bay, an arm of the Atlantic Ocean. The Hudson as it passes through New York City was also known as the North River.

The Hudson and its tributaries--notably the Mohawk River--drain a large area, and the river is navigable for a great distance. The Erie Canal, built early in the 19th century, connects the Hudson River to Lake Erie, enabling shipping between cities on the Great Lakes and Europe via the Atlantic Ocean.

The Hudson is sometimes called a "drowned" river, because the rising ocean after the most recent ice age brought salt water well above the mouth of the river. The lower part of the river near Manhattan is a tidal estuary, with strong tides making parts of New York Harbor difficult and dangerous to navigate. The old riverbed beyond the current shoreline, Hudson Canyon, is a rich fishing area.

The Hudson is crossed at numerous points by bridges and tunnels. The width of the river in its southern half required major feats of engineering to bridge, the results today visible in the Verrazano and George Washington Bridges, as well as the Lincoln and Holland Tunnels.

Hudson Soft

(From Wikipedia, the free Encyclopedia)

Hudson Soft is a Japanese publisher and developer, founded on May 18, 1973.

Although it already started to sell PC-related products in 1975 it wasn't until 1984 when Hudson began to produce videogames for the Famicom (NES) that the company enjoyed notable success. Hudson's first Famicom title, Lode Runner, sold 12 million units. Hudson also made a joint venture with NEC to make the Turbografx-16 (North America) and PC Engine (Japan) family consoles, both of which failed. After a long history of producing games for Nintendo's consoles, Hudson teamed up with NCL and founded the joint venture Manegi Corporation in May of 1998.

Hudson's best-known game franchise to date is the Bomberman series, which has appeared on all major platforms. As of 2003, the company employed a staff of more than 400.
