Hanover (in German: Hannover), on the Leine river, is the capital city of the state of Lower Saxony (Niedersachsen) in Germany. It is also the capital of the surrounding Hanover district and region. Population: 523,100 (1999).
History
The town was founded in medieval times on the bank of the Leine river (the original name Honovere may be translated to "high bank"). It was a small village of ferrymen and fishermen, which became a comparatively large town in the 13th century. In the 14th century a massive city wall with three town gates was built to secure the city, and the main churches of Hanover were constructed.
In 1636 the Duke of Calenberg decided to move his residence to Hanover. His duchy was afterwards known as the Duchy of Hanover (see: House of Hanover). His descendants would later become kings of England; the first of them was George I, who ascended to the British throne in 1714. Three kings of England were at the same time princes (Electors) of Hanover. George III elevated the title to King of Hanover. The town expanded to the opposite bank of the Leine river and grew considerably.
During the Seven Years' War on July 26, 1757 the Battle of Hastenbeck took place. The French army defeated the Hanoverian Army of Observation, leading to the occupation of Hannover.
After Napoleon imposed the Convention of Artlenburg (Convention of the Elbe) on July 5, 1803 about 30,000 French soldiers occupied Hanover. The convention also meant the disbanding of the army of Hanover. George III did not recognize the Convention of the Elbe and made an effort to recruit foreign troops. As a result a great number of soldiers of Hanover eventually emigrated to England leading to the King's German Legion which later played an important role in the Battle of Waterloo.
In 1837 the personal union of Great Britain and Hanover was ended, as William IV's heir in Great Britain was female, and Hanover could be inherited only by males. Hanover continued as a kingdom until 1866, when it was annexed by Prussia. After the annexation, people of Hanover were opposing Prussian regime. Nevertheless, the growth of Hanover city continued until World War II, when two thirds of the town was bombed to ashes. After the war Hanover became famous for commercial expos, the Deutsche Messe, where the annual CeBIT is held, the world's greatest computer expo. In 2000, Hanover hosted the Expo 2000.

Hanover (German Hannover) is a historical territory in today's Germany. It was an independent country from 1815 to 1866 and a province of Prussia from 1866 to 1946. It is named after its capital, Hanover. In 1636, the capital of the Calenberg line of the Duchy of Brunswick-Lüneburg was moved to the city of Hanover, and hence the line was also known as the Hanover line. In 1692, the duke received the additional title of elector (see Holy Roman Empire elector). In 1714, the Hanoverian electors became kings of Great Britain (see House of Hanover).
The Kingdom of Hanover was created by the Congress of Vienna of 1815, and given to the former electors. The personal union with the United Kingdom ended in 1837. In the Prussian-Austrian War of 1866, Hanover was annexed by Prussia and became a province (3.5 million inhabitants in 1939). In 1946, the British military administration made Hanover the main part of the state of Lower Saxony.

Located on the Connecticut River in the state of New Hampshire, United States, Hanover has a population of 10,850. It best known as the home of Dartmouth College. Hanover borders the towns of Lyme, Lebanon, West Lebanon, Etna, and Norwich, Vermont. Norwich and Hanover share one of the only inter-state school districts in the nation.Norwich and Hanover are two of the small number of towns that travellers must pass through while hiking the Appalachian trail. Hanover is also the home of the US Army Corps of Engineers Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory (CRREL).
Prior to its incarnation as Hanover, the town was known as Dresden. In the late 18th century, Dresden was one of a group of neighboring New Hampshire towns that briefly defected to Vermont, when the Republic of Vermont was an independent nation. This status was short-lived, however, as New Hampshire threatened the Republic of Vermont with war, with the aid of the other 12 states, if the towns were not returned. As a result, Vermont rejected the towns' defections, and they were returned to New Hampshire in the US.

The House of Hanover (the Hanoverians) were a British royal dynasty which succeeded the House of Stuart, in 1714. The first Hanoverian rulers, George I and George II were from Hanover, in what is now Germany. The Hanoverians were descended from Heinrich der Löwe.Holders of the British Crown also served as Electors of Hanover. Beginning in 1814, when Hanover was made into a kingdom, the British monarch also served jointly as King of Hanover. The thrones of the United Kingdom and Hanover diverged in 1837 as the throne of Hanover, unlike that of the U.K., was under the Salic law, and so did not pass to Queen Victoria and instead passed to her uncle, the Duke of Cumberland. (See: Rulers of Hanover)
The dynasty provided six monarchs:
Of the Kingdom of Great Britain:
Of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland:
- George I (r. 1714-1727)
- George II (r. 1727-1760)
- George III (r. 1760-1820)1
Victoria changed the name of the dynasty to the House of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, after her husband, Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha. However, the current British monarch is a direct descendant of George I, and the Act of Settlement requires the monarch to be a Protestant descendant of Sophia, Electress of Hanover.
- George III (r. 1760-1820)
- George IV (r. 1820-1830)
- William IV (r. 1830-1837)
- Victoria (r. 1837-1901).
