Freeman is a city located in Hutchinson County, South Dakota. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 1,317.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.8 km² (1.1 mi²). 2.8 km² (1.1 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.
There are 602 households out of which 21.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.7% are married couples living together, 5.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 39.5% are non-families. 38.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 25.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.09 and the average family size is 2.78.
In the city the population is spread out with 19.7% under the age of 18, 4.7% from 18 to 24, 21.6% from 25 to 44, 19.1% from 45 to 64, and 34.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 48 years. For every 100 females there are 80.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 74.7 males.
The median income for a household in the city is $29,152, and the median income for a family is $39,118. Males have a median income of $26,795 versus $17,788 for females. The per capita income for the city is $17,077. 6.0% of the population and 4.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 6.1% are under the age of 18 and 10.2% are 65 or older.

There are 648 housing units at an average density of 233.8/km² (604.8/mi²). Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 201.2 km² (77.7 mi²). 176.6 km² (68.2 mi²) of it is land and 24.6 km² (9.5 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 12.23% water.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there are 719 people, 301 households, and 207 families residing in the town. The population density is 4.1/km² (10.5/mi²). There are 493 housing units at an average density of 2.8/km² (7.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 97.50% White, 0.28% African American, 0.70% Native American, 0.28% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 1.25% from two or more races. 0.56% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 301 households out of which 22.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.1% are married couples living together, 5.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.9% are non-families. 24.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.39 and the average family size is 2.84.
In the town the population is spread out with 22.7% under the age of 18, 5.3% from 18 to 24, 23.4% from 25 to 44, 30.7% from 45 to 64, and 17.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 44 years. For every 100 females there are 103.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 101.4 males.
The median income for a household in the town is $30,500, and the median income for a family is $39,375. Males have a median income of $27,625 versus $20,625 for females. The per capita income for the town is $16,609. 16.3% of the population and 8.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 28.9% are under the age of 18 and 15.1% are 65 or older.
