Health | An immunoenzyme test that uses antibodies to detect the presence of drugs and other substances in the urine and blood. The test uses antibodies that react only with the particular drug for which the sample is being tested. In the test mixture the antibodies attach themselves to the drug if it is present in the sample. It is not designed to measure amounts of the drug present, only its presence or absence. It is commonly seen in the literature as EMIT (d.a.u.) wherein the d.a.u. means "drugs of abuse in urine". Though launched in 1973 for the study of antiepilepsy drugs, it is now used predominantly, but not exclusively, for the detection of drugs of abuse in the urine. (references) |
