Arnold is a fictional character in the TV cartoon Hey Arnold. Arnold is dreamer and an idealist who always tries to see the best in people and to do the right thing . Whenever he sees someone in trouble, Arnold goes out of his way to help them out, even if it is not sensible to do so (example, when he tried to protect some of his classmates, who had mooned their principal). Arnold often acts as the stable center to those around him , whether he is around his "family" in his grandparents' boarding house The Sunset Arms, or around his friends at his school, P.S. 118. According to the Parents Day and The Journal episodes, Arnold's parents were doing missions in the Central American jungle when they disappeared. He's had two major crushes in the series: with 5th grader Ruth McDougal, and with a classmate named Lila. Both of these ended after he hung out with other girls and learned about how not-so-great they were (French exchange student Cecile in Arnold's Valentine, then his friend Gerald's younger sister Timberly in Timberly Loves Arnold). Most recently, he's had to come to terms with classmate Helga's love confession in the movie based on the series.
Unlike the other major characters on the show (except for Sid), Arnold's surname (and presumbably that of his grandparents in whose boarding house he lives) has never been disclosed in any episode script or other publicly available documentation. There had been plans to reveal it in the series' 2nd film, which would also deal with his search to find his parents, however, problems between the series creator Craig Bartlett and Nickelodeon , as well as the low gross of the first film, have left the future of this 2nd film in doubt.

Arnold Alois Schwarzenegger (born July 30, 1947) is an Austrian-born American bodybuilder, actor, and politician currently serving as the 38th Governor of California. He gained worldwide fame as a star of Hollywood action films such as The Terminator and Total Recall.
Personal background
Schwarzenegger was born in Thal, Austria (four miles from Graz) to a Gendarmerie-Kommandant policeman, Gustav Schwarzenegger (1907-1972) and Aurelia Jadrny (1922-1998). He moved to the US in 1968 and became a US citizen in 1983. Meanwhile, he earned a B.A from the University of Wisconsin, Superior where he graduated with a major in international marketing of fitness and business administration in 1979. The football stadium in Graz was renamed Arnold Schwarzenegger Stadium in 1997.
In 1971 Schwarzenegger's brother Meinhard was killed in an automobile accident.
In 1986, Schwarzenegger married noted TV journalist Maria Shriver, niece of late President Kennedy. The couple have 4 children: daughters Katherine and Christina and sons Patrick and Christopher.
In April 1997 he underwent an operation to correct a congenital heart valve defect.
Bodybuilding career
Schwarzenegger first gained fame as a prominent bodybuilder. His well-developed physique revolutionized the sport, earned him the moniker "The Austrian Oak" and won him the titles of Junior Mr. Europe, Mr. World, Mr. Universe (five times) and Mr. Olympia (seven times). He is considered one of the most important figures in the history of bodybuilding, and his legacy in the sport is commemorated in the Arnold Classic annual bodybuilding competition.
Acting career
Schwarzenegger's uniquely muscular appearance earned him several movie roles. His first credited film appearance was in Hercules in New York (1970). Under the name Arnold Strong, Schwarzenegger played the title character who travels to New York and befriends a mild-mannered man. His accent in the film was so thick that his lines were dubbedbed. Schwarzenegger came to the attention of more people in the documentary Pumping Iron (1977).
Schwarzenegger's breakthrough film was Conan the Barbarian (1982), cemented by Conan the Destroyer (1984). He is perhaps most known for his role in James Cameron's The Terminator (1984) where his deadpan acting style actually helped the film. Schwarzenegger's acting ability (described by one critic as having an emotional range that "stretches from A almost to B") has long been the butt of many jokes; he retains a strong Austrian accent in his speech even in roles which do not call for such an accent. However, few of the fans of his work seem to care. He also made a mark with injecting his films with a droll sense of humor, setting him apart from the more serious action heroes such as those played by Sylvester Stallone.
Following his arrival as a Hollywood superstar, he made a number of commercially successful films: Commando (1985), Raw Deal (1986), The Running Man (1987), Predator (1987) and Red Heat (1988). Twins, (1988) a comedy with Danny DeVito, was a change of pace. Total Recall (1990) got Schwarzenegger $10m and 15% of the gross, and hid a widely praised, thought-provoking science-fiction script behind his usual violent action. Kindergarten Cop (1990) was another comedy.
Schwarzenegger arguably hit his high-water mark with Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991). After the box-office failure of The Last Action Hero, (1993) Schwarzenegger's career never again achieved quite the same prominence. True Lies (1994) was a sendup of spy films. It was followed by Eraser (1996), End of Days (1999), The 6th Day (2000) and Collateral Damage (2002). He starred in Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines (2003) and was slated to star in a possible True Lies 2, but his duties as California governor have likely put his movie career on hold until at least 2007.
Political career

Political affiliation
Schwarzenegger is a registered voter of the Republican party, although he describes himself as fiscally conservative and socially moderate. He backed President Ronald Reagan while he was in office but chastised fellow Republicans during the impeachment of Bill Clinton.
In an interview on October 29, 2002, with MSNBC's Chris Matthews at Chapman University, Schwarzenegger explained why he is a Republican:
"Well, I think because a lot of people don't know why I'm a Republican, I came first of all from a socialistic country which is Austria and when I came over here in 1968 with the presidential elections coming up in November, I came over in October, I heard a lot of the press conferences from both of the candidates Humphrey and Nixon, and Humphrey was talking about more government is the solution, protectionism, and everything he said about government involvement sounded to me more like Austrian socialism."Then when heard Nixon talk about it, he said open up the borders, the consumers should be represented there ultimately and strengthen the military and get the government off our backs. I said to myself, what is this guy's party affiliation? I didn't know anything at that point. So I asked my friend, what is Nixon? He's a Republican. And I said, I am a Republican. That's how I became a Republican."
It had been known since the 1990s that Schwarzenegger was interested in public office (a belief jokingly referenced in a Sylvester Stallone film, Demolition Man, where a future America passed a constitutional amendment to allow foreign-born Americans and, thus Schwarzenegger, to become President).
Regarding a run for public office, in 1999, he told Talk magazine that "I think about it many times." He said, "The possibility is there because I feel it inside. I feel there are a lot of people standing still and not doing enough. And there's a vacuum." Some analysts suspected that it was his unofficial announcement to run in the 2002 California gubernatorial election. Ultimately, he supported his friend and fellow moderate Republican, Richard Riordan, former mayor of Los Angeles, California.
Venturing into politics
Schwarzenegger was appointed Chairman of the President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports in the administration of George H. W. Bush from 1990 to 1993. During that time, Schwarzenegger traveled across the U.S. promoting physical fitness to kids. He later served as Chairman for the California Governor's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports under Governor Pete Wilson.
Schwarzenegger scored his first real political success on November 5, 2002 when Californians approved his personally crafted and sponsored Proposition 49, the "After School Education and Safety Program Act of 2002", an initiative to make state grants available for after school programs.
2003 California recall
In the 2003 California recall, Schwarzenegger was widely rumored to be considering a run at becoming Governor of California. In the July 2003 issue of Esquire magazine, he said, "Yes, I would love to be governor of California ... If the state needs me, and if there's no one I think is better, then I will run." When a recall campaign against Democratic governor Gray Davis qualified for the ballot on July 24, Schwarzenegger left many wondering whether he would jump into the contest. Schwarzenegger was just wrapping up a promotional tour for Terminator 3 and said he would announce his decision on whether to run on August 6 on the The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.
In the days and even hours leading up to the show's taping, political experts and insiders concluded that Schwarzenegger was leaning against running. Even his closest advisors believed he was probably not going to run. Schwarzenegger stunned the pundits when he announced that he did intend to run in the October 7 recall election. He said, "The politicians are fiddling, fumbling and failing. The man that is failing the people more than anyone is Gray Davis. He is failing them terribly, and this is why he needs to be recalled and this is why I am going to run for governor." Rumors leading up to the announcement said that his wife, Maria Shriver, a Kennedy family Democrat, was against his running, and he wanted her approval in order to run. He said, "It's the most difficult [decision] I've made in my entire life." Ultimately, Shriver said she would support Schwarzenegger no matter what he chose, so he decided to run. Schwarzenegger had the most name recognition in a crowded field of candidates for Governor, but he had never held public office and his political views were unknown to most Californians.
Crowd watching Schwarzenegger inauguration
larger imageSchwarzenegger's candidacy was immediate national and international news, with media outlets dubbing him the "Governator" (referring to The Terminator movies, see above) and "The Running Man" (the name of another of his movies), and calling the recall election "Total Recall" (ditto) and "Terminator 4: Rise of the Candidate" (referring to his movie Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines). Schwarzenegger was quick to use his well-known one-liners, promising to "pump up Sacramento" (the state capital) and tell Gray Davis "hasta la vista." At the end of his first press conference, he said "I'll be back." Schwarzenegger looked to follow in the footsteps of former California governor and one-time movie star Ronald Reagan. However, due to his status as a naturalized citizen he would not be eligible to seek the Presidency. Among his campaign team were Rob Lowe, Warren Buffett, and George Shultz.
Within the last five days before the election, allegations of sexual misconduct arose from sixteen individual women. In particular, Elaine Stockton claimed that Schwarzenegger groped her breast at a Gold's Gym in 1975 (she was 19 at the time). Schwarzenegger admitted that he has "behaved badly sometimes" and apologized, but also stated that "a lot of (what) you see in the stories is not true". This came after an interview from the same era surfaced in which Schwarzenegger discussed attending sexual orgies and indulging in drugs like cocaine. [1] [1] [1]
Sexual harassment protesters
larger imageOpponents to Schwarzenegger have pegged him as a misogynistic man with a history of mistreating women, and who sends mixed messages by participating in violent films while preaching peace and non-violence. Supporters of Schwarzenegger claim that the allegations of mistreatment to women have no merit and were only a last-minute desperate attempt to smear his reputation. [1]
Allegations, based on selective quotation, were also made that he at one time admired Adolf Hitler and had praised him as a great propagandist. However the full text of the statement from which the quotation was taken significantly reduces the credibility of the allegations. Although Schwarzenegger's father was in fact a member of the Nazi party, opponents are slow to point out that Schwarzenegger has been a strong supporter of various Jewish groups, and has denounced the principles of the fascist German regime, saying "I have always despised everything that Hitler stands for."
These allegations did not end up hurting Schwarzenegger's campaign. On October 7, 2003, the 2003 California recall resulted in Governor Gray Davis being recalled with 55.4% of the 'Yes' vote. Schwarzenegger was elected Governor of California on the second ballot with 48.6% of the vote. He was sworn into office on November 17, 2003.
Governorship
Schwarzenegger's inauguration was opened by Vanessa Williams, his co-star from Eraser, with the singing of the National Anthem. His children joined others in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance, then Maria Shriver spoke and held the Bible while Schwarzenegger was sworn into the office of Governor. He then spoke a few words: "Today is a new day in California. I did not seek this office to do things the way they've always been done. What I care about is restoring your confidence in your government... This election was not about replacing one man. It was not replacing one party. It was about changing the entire political climate of our state."
In his first few hours in office Schwarzenegger fulfilled his campaign promise to repeal a 300% increase in vehicle license fees signed by Gov. Davis to raise $4 billion to close the state's budget deficit. On his first full day in office, Schwarzenegger proposed a three point plan to fix the budget woes. First, Schwarzenegger proposed floating $15 billion in bonds. Second, he urged voters to pass a constitutional amendment to limit state spending. Third, he sought an overhaul of workers compensation. Schwarzenegger also called the state legislature into a special session and said that spending cuts would also be necessary. He initiated the cuts by agreeing to serve as governor with no salary, a savings of $175,000.

Benedict Arnold (January 14, 1740/1-June 14, 1801), born in Norwich, Connecticut, was originally a rebel who became a general in the Continental Army. He was appointed a colonel of Massachusetts militia in 1775. He and Ethan Allen captured Fort Ticonderoga, gaining needed supplies of cannon for the Americans in the siege of Boston during the American Revolutionary War. Later in 1775 Arnold also led an expeditionary force from Boston to Quebec and participated in an unsuccessful attack in the Battle of Quebec (1775).Arnold was promoted to the rank of brigadier general and in 1776 oversaw the construction of America's first gunships on Lake Champlain, in the town of Whitehall, NY. This earned Whitehall the nickname "Birthplace of the U.S. Navy" and under Arnold's leadership the new flotilla defeated a vastly superior British enemy fleet near Valcour Island, NY on October 11, 1776.
In 1777, Arnold was passed over by Congress for a promotion to a major generalship. Without a command of his own, he still played a role in defeating the British at the Battle of Saratoga.
He was a very good strategist who was well liked by his men and a friend of George Washington. Arnold was a principled man who felt that the Revolutionary War should be a fight purely between Britain and her colonies. When General Washington and the Continental Congress made an alliance with France against Britain, he disagreed strongly and began to pass information to British forces.
In 1780, he negotiated with British General Henry Clinton to hand over the American fort at West Point, New York to the British for 20,000 sterling (about $1,000,000 today). His plans were discovered when his courier, British Major John André, was captured with incriminating documents. Learning of André's capture, Arnold escaped and joined the British forces. He was appointed Brigadier General and led several subsequent attacks on American forces. On January 5, 1781 Richmond, Virginia was burned by British naval forces led by Arnold.
Within the United States, the name of Benedict Arnold has entered the English language as a synonym for "betrayer" or "traitor". Outside the US, however, he is thought of in much more neutral terms. In nations such as Canada and the United Kingdom he is regarded as a traitor who became a patriot, while Americans consider him to have done the reverse. Arnold defended his treasonous actions in a letter to Washington, stating, "love to my country actuates my present conduct, however it may appear inconsistent to the world, who very seldom judge right of any man's actions."
Arnold is buried in the crypt of St. Mary's Battersea Church, London.

Victorian-era poet and critic Matthew Arnold (1822 - 1888) was the son of Thomas Arnold, the legendary headmaster of Rugby School who was celebrated in the novel Tom Brown's Schooldays.Matthew Arnold himself attended Rugby and then Oxford University (Balliol College). He wrote most of his best-known poetry before the age of forty, after which he turned to literary and cultural criticism. His poem "Dover Beach", with its depiction of a nightmarish world from which the old religious verities have receded, is sometimes held up as an early, if not the first, example of the modern sensibility. In a famous preface to a selection of the poems of William Wordsworth, Arnold identified himself, a little ironically, as a "Wordsworthian." The influence of Wordsworth, both in ideas and in diction, is unmistakable in Arnold's best poetry.
He was led on from literary criticism to a more general critique of the spirit of his age. Between 1867 and 1869 he wote Culture and Anarchy, famous for the term he popularised for a section of the Victorian population: "Philistines", a word which derives its modern cultural meaning from him.
His niece (daughter of his younger brother Thomas), Mary Augusta Arnold, was a novelist under her married name of Mrs Humphry Ward.

The Magic School Bus is a series of books intended to teach scientific concepts to children. They were written between 1986 and 1999 by Joanna Cole and illustrated by Bruce Degen. The books feature the exploits of Ms. Frizzle and her class of students at Walkerville Elementary who board a magical school bus which takes them on educational adventures to space, under the Earth, into the human body, or to other such locations. The books were written in the first person from the point of view of a student in the Friz's class. In 1994, they were also made into a television show of the same name by Scholastic Productions, and Microsoft started releasing Magic School Bus software in the same year. Each episode runs about 30 minutes. The show originally aired on PBS in the United States, but was dropped to make room for more shows aimed at pre-schoolers. The Magic School Bus was the first fully animated series to air on PBS. Fox Network now owns the series broadcast rights in the US and there are no plans to make more episodes. The Magic School Bus is also shown on TLC Network and Discovery Kids. The last episode was released in 1997. After the last Magic School Bus book was released, Cole and Degen started in 2001 a new series called Ms. Frizzle's Adventures which teaches social studies. There are now two books in that series.
Since the Magic School Bus books present scientific facts in the form of stories in which fantastic things happen (for example, a bus turns into a spaceship, or children shrink to the size of blood cells), each book has a page at the end detailing in a humorous manner which parts of the book represented scientific fact and which were fanciful storytelling. In the TV show, this was replaced by a short scene at the end of each episode in which the producer of the show receives phone calls from kids complaining about how some things that happened on the show couldn't happen in real life.
Voice actors on the show included Lily Tomlin as Ms. Frizzle and Malcolm Jamal-Warner as the producer.
See list of Magic School Bus books, episodes, and software for specific information about entries in the series.
Characters
Ms. Frizzle
Valerie Felicity Frizzle is a teacher at Walkerville Elementary. She is normally referred to as Ms. Frizzle but her students sometimes call her "the Friz." She has bright red hair and wacky clothes and is usually described as being weird. Her clothing matches the subject of each adventure. In the original books, Ms. Frizzle's dress at the end gave a clue as to what the next book was about. In the last book, her dress at the end is covered with question marks.
"Take chances, make mistakes, get messy!" is Ms. Frizzle's favourite saying. She encourages her kids to learn and love science. She has succeeded with all of them except for Arnold.
Ms. Frizzle has a pet lizard named Liz that serves as a teaching assistant for her. Ms. Frizzle lives in Walkerville in a house which has many Jetson-like inventions and runs on batteries.
Ms. Frizzle seems to have a never-ending supply of distant relatives who used to say something unusual -- for example, "As my Aunt Minerva used to say, 'there's nothing more marvelous than mud.'"
Arnold
Arnold Perlstein is the most unique member of Ms. Frizzle's class, because he is the sole student who does not enjoy her magical field trips and would rather go on a normal trip.
He is interested in rocks and geology. When he lost some rocks from his collection in the CD-ROM The Magic School Bus Explores Inside the Earth, the class went on a field trip to recover them. He was excited, until he found out that they would encounter volcanoes and other dangers. Arnold knew enough about rocks to be the first kid to become a member of Granite in The Magic School Bus Goes Cell-Ular. Arnold has blonde hair and wears round glasses. Arnold has cousin named Janet, who first appeared in the book The Magic School Bus Lost in the Solar System, and appears often in the televison series.
Carlos
Carlos Ramon is known for telling jokes. He has made many odd inventions, like an instrument and a rain-catcher. Carlos doesn't get along with Dorothy Ann. Carlos has a little brother named Mikey.
Dorothy Ann
Dorothy Ann (aka D.A.) is a bookworm, her most prized possession being her book bag. In The Magic School Bus Sees Stars, she celebrated her ninth birthday. D.A. enjoys star gazing and has a telescope outside her bedroom window. She has a little sister.
Keesha
Keesha Franklin is probably the most sceptical of the students.
Phoebe
Phoebe Terez has brown hair and is mostly concerned with the well-being of animals. She transferred to Walkerville Elementary, where Ms. Frizzle teaches, from her old school (which, oddly enough, is named Phoebe's Old School.)
Ralphie
Ralphie Tenelli is interested mainly in sports. He frequently daydreams in Ms. Frizzle's class, where daydreams aren't a waste of time. Ralphie's mother (Dr. Tenelli) is a medical doctor.
Wanda
Wanda Li has black hair, wears a pink vest, and is very interested in adventure and "going where no kid has gone before." Wanda's mother is a science writer and she (Wanda, not her mother) has a little brother named William.
Tim
Timothy ("Tim") can usually be found with a notebook used for drawing pictures.
Liz
Liz is Ms. Frizzle's pet lizard. There is no known lizard like her in the real world, as Liz can do advanced tasks such as driving the magic bus. In original books she didn't appear to be much more than an ordinary lizard, but the cartoon series changed that. In Microsoft's Magic School Bus software, she speaks and serves as a help button.
